The Smear Gap

⊆ August 19th, 2008 by ronnie | ˜ No Comments »
McCain’s attacks on Obama go too far. He knows better.
Jonathan Alter
This is hardly the nastiest campaign in recent memory. But it’s not shaping up as the “civil” contest that both candidates promised either. Instead, we’re seeing the emergence of a “smear gap”. John McCain making stuff up about Barack Obama, and Obama trying to figure out how hard he should hit back.

As usual, news organizations are deeply afraid to say that one side is more negative than the other. Doing so sounds “unfair.” It’s much easier, and less controversial, to say that “both candidates” are being negative. That would be “balanced”, but also untrue.

One of the wonders of the Web is that it’s now possible for neutral observers to determine the truth or falsity of various attacks, and to have that information instantly available to anyone. The best arbiter is factcheck.org, which is sponsored by the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania (Disclosure: Newsweek.com has a partnership with factcheck.org). If you don’t believe me about the smear gap, check their analyses of campaign ads.

Money Hunt — Who Wants It

⊆ August 19th, 2008 by ronnie | ˜ No Comments »

Politics makes strange bed fellows, or not in this case as one of the most interesting stories of this political season comes to a close: John McCain returns $2,300 without fanfare to the publisher of Manhunt a popular gay hookup site. That publisher, Jonathan Crutchley, proceeds to donate the cash to the Obama campaign.

“He said, ‘If John is too good for my money, I’ll give it to Barack,’ ” an associate tells the Boston Herald.

I am so sick of McCain

⊆ August 18th, 2008 by ronnie | ˜ No Comments »

Exactly what does John McCain mean when he says Barak Obama would loose a war to be president?  I seem to remember that it is his argument that we have already won in Iraq.  We removed Saddam did we not?  There were no WMD…  So exactly what signifies winning the war?  McCain has said the “surge” has worked, so then where is the loss?  The leaders of Iraq are asking, no, demanding a timetable for US withdrawal. Senator Obama is only voicing the same call so it seems to me that is hardly a situation where we lose.  Is the goal not that we are able to leave the country to the people of Iraq?

Color me confused.  Actually I am not confused — I see it for what it is: A feeble attempt to paint Obama at a minimum as someone who does not put country first and possibly a traitor.  What a complete jerk McCain is and a person who does put his ambition first before the good of the country and before telling the truth.

Jackson Browne Sues McCain

⊆ August 14th, 2008 by ronnie | ˜ No Comments »

I always liked Browne’s music and it seems John McCain does as well.  Browne’s lawyers filed suit in California to block McCain’s use of Running On Empty in one of his commercials. Good for you Jackson!

Is it really neccesary?

Joe Klein has a good piece this morning in the Swampland about the new anti-Obama book and if the RCN needs to go down this path supporting such trash journalism.
